Long, lush eyelashes have been something that girls all over the world strive to get. There’s something really glamorous about a set of dark voluminous lashes, but there’s only so much mascara can do for you. That’s why eyelash extensions are one of the most sought-after servies in the industry.
WHAT ARE EYELASH EXTENSIONS?
Eyelash Extensions are used to enhance the length, curliness, fullness, and thickness of natural eyelashes. They are (mainly) synthetic fibers that are attached to the natural lashes using medical grade adhesive. Lash extensions can come in a variety of sizes ranging from 6mm-18mm with a different curl width options.
WHAT TYPES OF LASHES ARE THERE?
Well, this is a somewhat loaded question… eyelash extensions may be made from several materials including mink, synthetic, or horse hair.
In the 1890’s – 1950’s, human and animal hair was used to extent the natural eyelash by sewing them in like you would hair extensions. Later towards the 1970’s/1980’s eyelash extensions were made synthetically by various types of plastics.
SO, the concept of eyelash extensions have been around for a very long time! It was only in the late 2000’s when it started gaining popularity thanks to a Korean beauty company ^.^ Yay me! Yay Korea! LOL
There are various “styles” of lashes (see above photo). The basic styles most lash artists are taught and perform are: Natural (following your natural lash lengths), Open Eye (gives the illusion of a larger and rounder eye by placing longer extensions in the center of your eyes), Cat Eye (longer towards the outter edges), and Doll Eye (overall added length following the natural eye shape). With growing trends there hundreds of styles that are created and renamed to suit each market and city.
Classic lashes are a 1:1 ratio of one extension applied to one natural lash. Hybrid lashes are classic lashes and volume fan lashes mixed together. Volume lashes are 2-6 thin eyelash extensions which make a fan shape to allow for a look of full fluffy lashes. Mega volume lashes are 10 or more super thin eyelash extensions.
THE PROCESS – HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
Because an average person might have anywhere from one hundred to two hundred lashes per eye, it can take from one to three hours to attach a full, new set. Speed is mainly based on how much experience one has. The amount of lashes one can put on varies upon the existing natural eyelashes. Because we lose natural eyelashes every day the eyelash extensions usually last between 3–4 weeks and during that time period, natural lashes start falling out or thinning. Maintaining a full set of eyelashes requires a fill every 2–3 weeks or a partial set every 3-4 weeks. If done correctly, there should be no damage to the natural lashes.
Cheaper is not always better. Better is not always more expensive.
Look for experience NOT price.
TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION
Well, there are a lot of titles one uses to classify themselves. Most lash industry professionals go by: “Lash Technician”, “Lash Artist”, and “Lash Stylist”. Then you have those that get creative and use “Lash Queen”, “Lash Guru”, and “the Lash Professional”. So I guess it all depends on what you want to call them….
Training. Most larger eyelash companies requires you to take their training before you can purchase their products. Unfortunately, there are only a handful of states that require you to register and be state certified as an eyelash technician/artist or a cosmetologist/aesthetican.
WISCONSIN, does not require you to have a special certification NOR a cosmetology or aesthetics license. With that said, I urge you to PLEASE do your research before price shopping.
HOW MUCH COST DOES IT COST?
Depending on your area a New Set of Classic eyelash extensions can run you anywhere between $70 – $400! In our area (Appleton, WI) I have found it to be $100- $450. The lowest of $100 stated a 3hr appointment!
I cannot comment too much on what others charge and why it is that price. What I can say is what my prices are, with the why and how. So here’s my little blurb of my eyelash services and with the why and how.
WHY CHOOSE MATHILDA AT SKINSPARATIONS?
EXPERIENCE. I have been providing Eyelash Services in Wisconsin since 2011. I have been trained with 3 different companies based in the US and 2 from Korea.
PRICING. My prices are Classic $189, fill $50; Hybrid $199, fill $55; and Volume $210, fill $60. I don’t have the overhead of these larger or “boutique” salons so I keep ALL my prices in the middle. I won’t “cheapen” the industry by charging the absolute minimum (plus I have to live and have bills to pay lol). The cost of eyelash extensions are roughly the same no matter what supply company you are with.
TIME AND PRODUCT. Since I have been doing lashes for a long time, I have perfected my own application techniques and developed the muscles required for speed. On average a Full Set (no matter what style) takes roughly 60 minutes and Fills 30-45 minutes. Hate to toot my own horn, but I think my record time for a Full Set was 45 minutes and Fill 15 minutes. I was like Hammy from Over the Hedge… a lot of caffeine!
I use Korean PBT blend fibers, which are the same fibers toothbrush hairs are made from. They are a synthetic fiber. They are heated and treated with formulations that give appearance and feel of mink or silks, faux mink or Siberian mink. They are lightweight, flexible and hold their shape. The adhesive I use also holds longer and stronger than most (90% of my clients come in every 3-4 weeks). I have seen and used others but they only keep the bond for a week, which requires you to get fills much sooner (every 1-2.5 weeks).
